Ballincollig Open Day Marks Historic Day for Club On Sunday the 29th of April
Ballincollig Rugby Club invited the community and various dignitaries to witness the opening of their state of the art changing rooms in the Club. Ballincollig RFC is a relatively new club and it’s short history is a story in itself. This opening marks the end of a period where the club saw itself go from one end of Ballincollig, sometimes with changing facilities and sometimes not, and the beginning of a period where according to Club President John Garrett it’s now all about the rugby.
Ballincollig RFC started off in modest circumstances as recently as 1978, some more seasoned players from Ballincollig were trying to find a way to continue their playing career. Tony Lancaster is one of the founding members of Ballincollig RFC explains “It began with some older fellas trying to continue to play rugby, trying to play for an extra year or two and that is really how it started”.
Groundless and boasting the bones of just one team, they began to play in local firm John A Wood’s GAA grounds in Ovens County Cork, after a few years they moved to Murphy’s Farm in Bishopstown, and Inismore in Ballincollig’s Regional Park, and the Oriel House Hotel, the latter venue was the first that boasted something remotely akin to changing rooms. In 1991 came the break through from a man called Noel Tanner.
Noel Tanner owned a bungalow opposite Classes Lake outside of Ballincollig, and was keen not to see buildings built opposite his house, so through some organisation sold his land across the road to what was to become Tanner Park, home of Ballincollig RFC.
All was not home and remotely dry for the players in Ballincollig RFC yet, the land in question was in fact a pond with surrounding swamplands, someway short of today’s 2 pitches. It took a landslide at the end of Cork’s Carrigrohane’s Straight, and some helpful County Council members to make a Carrigrohane’s disaster turn into Ballincollig Rugby Club’s playing surface!
In 1991 Munster legend Tommy Kiernan turned the sod, and by the 1993 season Tanner Park was operational as a playing field. If now we had the land, it was to be another 4 years for a clubhouse, which is one of the finest in Cork, and this weekend it’s joined by high specification changing rooms that any senior club would be proud of.
To celebrate the opening Bishop Buckley had a few words, followed by a prayer from Father Sean O’Driscoll, culminating in Batt O Keefe, Minister of State doing the official opening. John Garrett thanked the players, his family and club stalwarts who made the day possible, but special praise was reserved for Mick O’Keefe in his project management from all the players, as they say the experience of a shower in December thankfully will never be the same!
If the players finally have a home, they have also come far from 1 team, now the club boasts Junior Munster Division 2 team, as well as South Munster Junior 2 and 3 League, as well as Under 20, Under 18, Under 16, and under 14 as well as a thriving mini rugby set-up. The growth doesn’t stop there; the club has another senior team, with the founding of the Ladies team back in 1995.
Tony points out “We’ve achieved home grown players, apart from 3 on the senior team, those fellas have been with us from under 8 level!” Indeed the club is rightfully pleased with the under age structure, in addition to the busy Saturdays filled with mini rugby the club has added to it’s under 14 16 and 18 structure with the under 20 recently added to the club’s portfolio. This has been very successful, as the club knew no success would come from drafting in players en masse for the senior team, pride in the jersey is endemic, simply because these lads have fought to wear it since they were boys.
The future, well the club’s future lies in Munster Junior Division 1, Club President John Garrett elaborates, “We make no bones about our ambition to have the lads into Junior Division 1 rugby in the next three to four seasons, competing against the likes of Youghal and Cobh Pirates, and we would love to be playing Senior Rugby in 10 years time. We have made the investment in the infrastructure, and our club facilities are now at a level that they are the envy of some senior clubs”. Indeed, Ballincollig’s Rugby Teams may literally be home and dry, but their journey is a long way from over.

Ballincollig v Tralee.
If Saturday is to be Super Saturday in the final destination of the Six Nation’s Championship then last Sunday was Super Sunday in the relegation battle in Division Two. By the permutations available any one of five teams could have joined St. Mary’s for the drop. Castleisland, Douglas, Ballincollig , Tralee or Abbeyfeale were all in danger.
The likelihood of them going down was in the order given above. However Super Sunday turned out literally to be a vary damp squib. Torrential rain caused the referee to call off the Tralee Ballincollig game fifteen minutes before kick off in Tralee. The Old Christians v Douglas game was abandoned after seventy minutes with the score at nil all. In the only game played Abbeyfeale beat Castleisland 17 – 0. This result decides the entire issue.
Castleisland are relegated so the other results are now a non issue. Ballincollig are now safe in Division Two and can look forward to their upcoming Cup games. The can also look forward to opening of the new dressing rooms which should be completed next month.
Ballincollig J1
Ballincollig 22 Castleisland 3.
A historic weekend for Irish Rugby. England given a rousing welcome to Croke Park and then given a real royal thumping by a brilliant Irish side. What a pity they conceded that last minute try to France.
If as they say all politics are local then rugby equally has a hugely important local significance. None more so than Ballincollig’s crunch game against Castleisland. Ballincollig having made a good start to the league were back in the relegation zone after a run of poor results. Castleisland and Tralee are the other two clubs competing with us to avoid that last relegation spot. To make things even more interesting Ballincollig’s final two games are against Castleisland and Tralee. Sunday’s game therefore was as near to make or break as you could get.
Ballincollig put in as good a display as one will get. By halftime tries from Darragh Lancaster and Cathal Twohig had Ballincollig ahead 10 –3.
In the second half another try by Darragh Lancaster and a fourth by Brian Calder gave Ballincollig an invaluable win with a bonus point thrown in for good measure. This was a great team display with great credit due to all the players. In the forwards Danny Gleeson, Kevin Neeson and Matt Chapman were particularly prominent. In the backs Darragh Lancaster, Brian O’Keeffe and Evan O’Driscoll in his new role in the center had great games.
Team : Brian O’Keeffe, James McSweeney, Evan O’Driscoll,Brian O’Mahony, Darragh Lancaster, BJ Harvey, Brian Calder, Danny Gleeson, Cathal Twohig, Micheal Kelly, Brian Buckley, Colm O,Mahony, Chris Butler, Matt Chapman, Kevin Neeson. Sub Rob Dennehy.
Next Sunday Ballincollig travel to play Carrig –on- Siur in the Junior Plate.
On Sunday week they play Tralee in the final game of the league. The future is in their own hands.

South Munster Under 18 Rugby League
Ballincollig 8 Cork Constitution 3
On last Saturday 10th February 2007 Ballincollig completed their league campaign with a home match against Cork Constitution @ Innismore.
Weather conditions were not ideal with driving rain and wet underfoot conditions. There was little between the teams from the start and while Ballincollig had just about the better of the exchanges they were unable to show their superiority on the scoreboard. They had some very good running moves which had the opposition on the defensive but with the line at their mercy the moves broke down time and time again. Ballincollig opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a well struck penalty from Shane Campbell after Cork Con infringed on their 22. That was the only score of the first half with both teams fairly evenly matched.
On the resumption Ballincollig showed more urgency and after mauling and rucking towards he Con line the ball was fed quickly out through the backs and the inrushing Billy Newman joined the line and touched down for the only try of the afternoon. Ballincollig were now on the ascendancy in all sectors of the pitch but try as they may they could not breach the opposition line again even though they constantly threatened it with Liam Murphy just being stopped short on two occasions and Podge Bohane on another occasion. Cork Con rallied to the end and when they converted a penalty with five minutes to go they were now only 5 pts in arrears, they battled hard to get the try they needed and Ballincollig held out for their hard earned victory.
Ballincollig Team: Barry Attridge, Brian O’Shea, Sean Murphy, Frank Mc Carthy, Shane Murphy, Micháel O’Regan, Colm Delaney, Paddy Murphy ,Sean Mc Garry, Shane Kavanagh, Eoin Mc Donagh, Podge Bohane, Sean Boyce, Denis Daly, Shane Campbell, David Baston, Liam Murphy, Liam Jennings, Eugene Boyce, Killian O’Callaghan, Billy Newman, John O’Flynn, Robert Foulkes, Robert Fitton and Adrian Hanley.
Training continues for the Cup Competitions.
Under 18 West Cork Cup
Ballincollig 36 Bandon 14
On Saturday 3rd February 2007 Ballincollig played host to Bandon in the semi-final of the Under 18 Rugby West Cork Cup.
The game was played in ideal conditions with bright sunshine and perfect underfoot conditions.
Ballincollig made the better start and after winning a good ruck ball on the Bandon 22 the ball was fed out through the backs and Billy Newman came into the line at pace and opened the scissoring with his first in the corner after 4 minutes. The Ballincollig dominance continued and as they ran the ball with every opportunity it put immense pressure on the Bandon defence which eventually paid dividends when Podge Bohane took a pop ball at pace from the base of a ruck and he ran in for his first try opt the day and scored under the posts which Shane Campbell converted.
The home side were now 12 nil ahead and were dominating in all areas. A log kick ahead from Shane Campbell was fumbled by the Bandon full back and the onrushing Billy Newman was on hand to kick it through and touch down for his second try to leave Ballincollig 17 pts ahead.
However Bandon were not going down without a fight as their big forwards mauled to the Ballincollig line and they scored under the posts and converted to give them a deserved 7 points. However on the stroke of half time Ballincollig were awarded a penalty on the Bandon 22 and the quick thinking Podge Bohane tapped and jinked his way to touch down under the posts which Shane Campbell converted to leave the half time score 24 – 14 in favour of Ballincollig.
On the resumption Bandon showed renewed energy and within minutes they scored a converted try under the posts after good work again by their useful forward unit to leave just 10 points between the sides.
Ballincollig re-grouped and again exerted extreme pressure on the opposition, they rucked and mauled their way to the opposition 22 and Podge Bohane rounded off a fine team effort to score his hat trick in the corner and extend their lead to 15 points. The game was now over as a contest giving the home side the opportunity to use their full panel and Ballincollig finished their scoring 5 minutes from time when Billy Newman again showed his pace and commitment when he joined the line and scored his hat trick under the posts which Shane Campbell converted to leave the final score Ballincollig 36 pts-Bandon 14 pts.
It was overall a good team performance with backs showing good lines of running and forwards rucking and mauling very well and making the hard yards when required.
Ballincollig Team: Barry Attridge, Conor Owens, Shaun Murphy, Brian O’Shea, Micháel O’Regan, Colm Delaney, Eoin Mc Donagh, Shane Kavanagh, Paddy Murphy, Podge Bohane, Sean Boyce, Shane Campbell, Liam Murphy, David Baston, Liam Jennings, John Flynn, Eugene Boyce, Billy Newman, Robert Foulkes & Robert Fitton.
Third Team V Chareville
21 January 2007
After a lengthy lay off because of weather and fixture difficulties Ballincollig Thirds fielded for their first fixture since November against Charleville in the league play offs on Sunday 21st. The game was moved to Innishmore due to Tanner Park being waterlogged. It was a great day for a match with sunny skyies and only a light breeze to contend with for a change. The home side got off to a flying start with a try from Ger Kelleher who blazed a trail for the line from 35 yds out to score after 4 minutes. Unfortunately this was to be our only score in the first half as Charleville proved to be a tough nut to crack. The opposition scored a try on the 39 min when we failed to clear from our 22 and handed Charleville an easy score to close on half-time 5 - 5.
At the interval we felt that we could lift our game another notch and put the visitors under pressure. Michael Baston, who kindly offered to aid Michael Browne on the the line, gave some words of wisdom and the 'collig team were fired up for the second half. From a driving maul Cathal Dodds (captain) touched down after 3 minutes which outhalf Shane Murphy converted.
As the game progressed the home side began to find their rythme. The forwards playing a good pick and frive game. With 25 minutes to go following sustained pressure and good hands through the backs Cillian Mohally, on the wing, scored in the corner. This proved to be the final score of the match. Well done to all. We face a stiff test next week at home to Skibbereen.

Home and Dry, Ballincollig RFC onwards and upwards.
Ballincollig RFC started off in modest circumstances as recently as 1978. In the year that Tom Kiernan’s Munster reached the heady heights of beating the All Blacks in Thomond Park, some more seasoned players Leeside were trying to find a way to continue their playing career. Tony Lancaster is one of the founding members of Ballincollig RFC explains “It began with some older fellas trying to continue to play rugby, trying to play for an extra year or two and that is really how it started”.
Groundless and boasting the bones of just one team, they began to play local firm John A Woods GAA grounds in Ovens County Cork, after a few years they moved to Murphy’s Farm in Bishopstown, and Inismore in Ballincollig’s Regional Park, and the Oriel House Hotel. If it seems a bit “jumpers for goalposts” it really was, the latter venue was the first that boasted something remotely akin to changing rooms.
All was not home and remotely dry for the players in Ballincollig RFC yet, the land in question was in fact a lake with surrounding swamplands, someway short of today’s 2 pitches. It took a landslide at the end of Cork’s Carrigrohane’s Straight, and some helpful County Council members to make a Carrigrohane’s disaster turn into Ballincollig Rugby Club’s playing surface!
At this point Munster legend Tommy Kiernan returns briefly to the story as he turned the sod in 1991, and by the 1993 season Tanner Park was operational as a playing field. If now we had the land, it was to be another 4 years for a clubhouse, which is one of the finest in Cork, and currently the club are in construction of high specification changing rooms that will be the envy of even the top senior clubs in Munster. (Much praise & thanks for club stalwart Mick O’Keefe in this endeavour from all the players, as they say the experience of a shower in December thankfully will never be the same!)
If the players finally have a home, they have also come far from 1 team, now the club boasts Junior Munster Division 2 team, as well as South Munster Junior 2 and 3 League, as well as Under 20, Under 18, Under 16, and under 14 as well as a thriving mini rugby set-up. The growth doesn’t stop there; the club has a second senior team, with the founding of the Ladies team back in 1995.
The club’s mantra is “Not just a club, but a way of Life”, and that can be seen through the familiar names that run through the Club’s short history, Tony Lancaster’s son Daragh plays for the firsts, and former president Pat Hanlon’s son Pat is also involved, after playing representative rugby, he now coaches the First team, and brought them through to promotion last season. Based in Limerick he travels down weekly to work with the club. Working with one of the youngest first teams the club has ever had, it’s mainly home grown talent, but with some key personnel the club has brought in, he’s hoping that they will more than survive giving the club’s new blood the time needed to develop.
The other senior team in the club is the ladies, who Brendan Stevenson and Wendy Keenan guided to AIL Division 2 victory last season, as well as winning All Ireland Plate for the second year in a row. Captain Dely Stevenson, niece of Brendan says “Winning two All Ireland titles last season was amazing, and unprecedented in the club, it was great to round up that winning weekend with Munster beating Leinster”. It’s back to business though and the ladies are actively recruiting in order to thrive rather than survive in the ladies top flight.
South Munster Under 18 League
Ballincollig 26 - Old Christians 13
Ballincollig RFC Under 18’s continued their league campaign on last Saturday 06.01.07 with an away game to Old Christians@ Rathcooney.
The game was played in ideal conditions on a dry sod with bright sunshine.
Ballincollig exerted immense pressure and dominated proceedings for the first 15 minutes but could not break a resolute Old Christians defence. The home side broke away from their 22 and good inter passing by both back and forwards saw them stopped on the Ballincollig 22 and from a clever kick through the home side were awarded a penalty in front of the Ballincollig posts for obstruction and Old Christians duly converted and went ahead 3 nil.
Ballincollig re-grouped on the re-start and after some good rucking and mauling Shane Campbell kicked a long touch to the home sides 22. Shane Kavanagh won the lineout for Ballincollig and after from the resultant ruck Michael Daly from full back joined the line and scored a good try in the corner to leave Ballincollig 5pts to 3 ahead at the break.
Ballincollig continued their dominance after the break and were rewarded after 5 minutes when Podge Bohane took a popped the ball from a ruck and beat three opponents before scoring spectacularly under the posts which Shane Campbell converted to leave Ballincollig 12 pts to 3 ahead.
However the home side struck back immediately and using their big forwards to get to the danger zone they popped the ball to their winger who scored in the corner to leave the score 12pts to 8pts. The home side hit back again some 6 minutes later and again scored another try to leave them ahead 13 pts to 12 pts.
Ballincollig however were resilient and when they were awarded a scrum on the home sides 22 Billy Newman joined the line and scored under the posts which Shane Campbell and Ballincollig were back in front 19pts to 12 pts. They now had their tails up and from the re-start the forwards set up a ruck and the ball was flashed through the backs and Dave Baston scored under the posts which Shane Campbell again converted to leave Ballincollig 26pts to 13 points ahead. Ballincollig dominated the remainder of the match and were worthy winners after a good solid performance.
It was a great team performance with the forwards dominating the set pieces and the back showing touches of excellence at times.

South Munster League, Under 16 League
Clonakilty 47 Ballincollig 7
Travelling down to Shannon Vale, the Under 16’s were 2nd in the league, with Highfield top and Clonakilty third. As any senior team can empathise playing in that West Cork venue is tough at the best of times, and that is what transpired.
After Kick Off, it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous, keeping the pressure up for the first 10 minutes, after this the tides turned with 2 successive tries from the home side which they converted. ‘Collig should be annoyed as they were due to 2 simple mistakes, just before the half time whistle it was again the home sides turn, when a sweet move between backs resulted in a try in the corner. It’s worth mentioning the quality of the backs in Clonakilty.
Upon resuming, ‘Collig huffed and puffed but they couldn’t get over that try line. During the phases, Clon turned over some ball, and that resulted in a fine breakaway try bringing the score to 28 nil. Ballincollig put the pressure on which eventually resulted in a great try from Cian O’Callaghan, converted by Josh Tannion. Unfortunately it was poor consulation as the home side came back with 2 more tries in the remaining minutes.
Coaches Niall Boland, Mick Baston, and Aidan Finton were not disappointed with his spirited performance, they were unfortunately beaten by a better team.
Team: 1. Gavin O’Gorman, 2. Colm O’Connell, 3. James Cronin © 4. Stephen Collins, 5. John Barry, 6. Ben Coveney 7. Cian O’Callaghan, 8. Jeremiah Cronin, 9. Josh Tannion, 10. Danny McSwiney, 11. Mallow 8 Ballincollig RFC 19
Another great win for Ballincollig on the road for a second week in a row. The game started badly for Ballincollig with Mallow scoring a try in the first few minutes of the game. Ballincollig made head way after this but still couldn’t manage a scored. Mallow got a penalty in front of the post late in the second half to make the score at half time 8 nil.
Coach Aidan Fitton gave the lads a bit of a talking to at half time. What ever he said worked wonders as Ballincollig looked a different team in the second half. John Barry got over for there first try early in the second half after a great rucking and mauling by the forwards. Shaun Horgan put over a great conversion from far out. Ballincollig scored again with James Cronin and the try was converted by Shaun Horgan.
For the next ten minutes Mallow got back into the game but Ballincollig soak up the pressure well. Ballincollig got back into the Mallow half and Gavin O’Gorman got over the line after a great rolling maul by the Ballincollig forwards.
A great time effort by Ballincollig in the second half. Next game against Dunmanway 9Th December Tanner Park kick off 11.00 o’clock. All Support welcomed.

Sundays Well 17 Ballincollig RFC 17
The Road show hit Caoislaoi for the away encounter against the well. We got off to a flying start crossing over for a try in the early minutes. That’s about as good as it got for us for the remainder of the half, the Well took every ball forward grinding there way inch by inch towards our line.
The first half ended with us 12 to 5 down. We brought on a few fresh faces, changed our tactics and took to the field. We kept the opposition pinned back in there own 22 hoping to cause a turn over. But the opposite happened and we conceded again. Our backs where really to the wall now! But we kept our composure, put the ball through the hands and we were rewarded with a converted try.
It was backs and forwards working together, good combinations, and some very hard yards earned and some excellent defence by Sunday’s Well, that drove the game down to the wire. Grunting and grinding we managed to squeeze over for a last gasp try, which we couldn’t convert.
An excellent game well done both squads.
Next game against Dunmanway 9Th December Tanner Park kick off 11.00 o’clock

Representative News
The best of luck to James Cronin, Luke Horgan and Conor Owens who represent Ballincollig RFC for South Munster Youths against East Munster in Fermoy RFC at 7.00 o’clock on Wednesday 6th December.
J1
Ballincollig J1’s lost in disappointing circumstances to league table toppers Newport. The final score in Tanner Park was 3 11, but coach Pat Hanlon was disappointed as Ballincollig slip from third to second in a tight J1 division 2 game. Given that this team is young, and was only promoted last season, one could be forgiven to think a third or fourth position out of 11 teams should be commended, but Hanlon expands on the squad he’s encharged with, “They’re young but they are very talented, we’re losing games marginally which are within our grasp, it’s just inexperience”.
J2
The J2’s are top of their league, and looking promising with a cup final, the O’Sullivan Cup (South Munster Cup) coming into the Christmas period, and are looking forward to a J2 League Semi Final in the new year.
J3
Similar good news with the J3 team, currently unbeaten, they are honing their skills and team bonding for this new club addition with some challenge games in recent times, though yesterday’s game versus Bandon was called off due to a secondment of their referee to a J2 game.

Bandon 3 Ballincollig RFC 22
Another good win on the road for Ballincollig. Ballincollig started the game well but we made crucial mistakes and couldn’t get the ball over the line. Eventually Dan Swiney got over in the left hand corner after the Ballincollig forwards had put together some great phases. Bandon responded with a penalty.
Bandon where on that attack, Shaun Horgan make a great interception in his own half and beat three Bandon players to score under the post. He converted his own try. Bandon kept coming at us but we defended well. James Cronin scored in the left hand corner a great individual try after running over three Bandon Players. Bandon came at us in the second half but couldn’t get over our line.
We had to defend for most of the second half. Cain Dennehy and Barry McDonagh where introduced earlier in the second half to add fresh legs to team. With 5 minutes to go we got a penalty inside the Bandon half, James Cronin tapped quickly and put Cain Dennehy in the corner for a try.

Ballincollig RFC 47 Crosshaven 5
It was a lovely fine fresh morning a great day for a match and we weren’t disappointed. Plenty of tries and some great running lines. We started off the game looking at the heels of Crosshaven players as they took the game to us and scored with there first attack. They kept the pressure on us and made us work hard to get any foot hold in the game.
With 15 minutes gone we were still behind, but gradually we got our selves moving. In atrocious conditions underfoot, the forwards were grinding away and paid off just before half time, with our first try. We began the second half more up beat, chased, kick and put the opposition under pressure which we never let drop for 25 minutes. Our running and forward play was making the Haven make mistakes which we turned into try after try.
As much as they could, Crosshaven could not break us down. We kept talking, rucking and driving. Our confidence was high, our tempo increasing, some good open play kept us in there half for the remainder of the game. A few more tries, some good subs came in to round off a good days work.
A good win lads, but a lot more team work to be done
Third Team
Ballincollig 20 - Cork Transport 27
The third team played Transport J2's in a challenge match in Tanner Park on Sunday last. It could be said it was a game of two halves with the'Collig lads looking on in amazement as the visitirs ran in four trys and one conversion, to just one score of a penalty from the home side .
A few words of wisdom from coach Keith Stafford and captain Cathal Dodds at the interval saw Ballincollig start the second half a different team. Brian O Regan got the recovery under way with a fine try and Cathal Dodds added two more with one conversion from Ml. Daly which left the score at the final whistle 27--20 to the visitors.
It was a fine performance from the team in the second half and the never say die attitude of the squad showed their tremendous character. There are two fixtures left in this league away to Bandon and home to Skibbereen before the Christmas break and then its into the playoffs.

Castleisland 8 Ballincollig 8
In an uneventful 1st half both teams squared up and much of the game was played around the halfway line. The only scores of the half was a pen each John Gleeson converting for 'collig. After the break Castleisland using the conditions to much better effect put Collig under huge pressure .
Good defending from our back three kept us in the game. After about 20 min 'collig finally woke up and after great play from our pack led well by Evan O' Driscoll and rory Owens they set up a nice blindside move for new cap Steve Hayes to score in the corner. John Gleeson was very unlucky with the touchline conversion. Castleisland hit back with a try with 5 min remaining to tie the game up .
A lot of hard work needs to be done over the coming weeks to ensure we are in a good position come the christmas break.

Ballincollig 19 Muskerry 6
Ballincollig emphatically grabbed their first victory in Division 2 on Sunday. Their previous two games had been very close and were games that arguably they should have won.
This victory was especially sweet as it was a local derby against near neighbours Muskerry. It was also great to see the good play from the earlier games carried on but the mistakes that had cost them against Old Christians and Douglas were now rectified.
Ballincollig bossed Muskerry in all areas of the pitch. The scrum was superb and the lineout which previously was a bit suspect was now imperious.
In the first half Kevin Doyle showed his speed and class to score a very good try. Ken O’Connell converted. Then John Redmond barged his way over for another try. A penalty to Muskerry left the half time score 12-3.
Ballincollig continued their good form in the second half and were rewarded with a fine try from Kevin Bastion. Ken O’Connell again converted. Ballincollig were unlucky that their fine display did not gain them a bonus point as they were on top for most of the game. Muskerry managed to kick just one other penalty in the second half.
In an overall fine display from the team Ian O’Malley, John Redmond and Kevin Neeson stood out.
Out wide Kevin Bastion and Brian O’Mahony were an excellent center partnership while Brian O’Keeffe gave another outstanding display at full back.
Team: Brian O’Keeffe, Eoin Cahill, Kevin Bastion, Brian O’Mahony, Kevin Doyle, Ken O’Connell ©, Brian Calder, Danny Gleeson, Ian O’Malley, John Redmond, Colm McCarthy, Chris Butler, Matt Chapman, Evan O’Driscoll, Kevin Neeson.
Subs: Brian Buckley, Barry Stevenson, Glen Murphy.
Next week we travel to St Marys in Limerick. Always hard to win up there but with the team playing as well as they are now we should travel with confidence.

Ballincollig 12 Waterpark 10
Ballincollig U20 in their second game of the League took on Waterpark who started the day 2nd in the league table. Ballincollig took control of possession and territory early on but it took 35min for the hosts to get rewarded with their first score. Great work from the home side’s pack at scrum time led to good ground been made by Danny Farrell and Rory Owens and from the resulting rucks new no.8 Glen Murphy powered over.
From the restart Waterpark changed their tactics and spread everything wide. Ballincollig coped well with great defence from Anthony Walsh at fullback and Kevin Ryan on the wing. At the 20 minute mark Waterpark converted a penalty to leave the score at 5 - 3.This spurred the home side on and from sustained pressure we were unlucky not to score .Waterpark with a defensive scrum on their 22 were driven off their own ball and Glen picked and ran unopposed to score his second try!! Although the rest of the pack are claiming the score for themselves. Luke Dennehy slotted home the conversion to leave the score at 12 - 3 with 8 minutes left. Waterpark threw everything into attack and were rewarded with an injury time try which they converted to leave the fulltime score 12 - 10.

Ballincollig 17 Clonakilty 24
A lovely Crisp morning, as we took the pitch against Clonakilty. From the Whistle, BC took the game to the opposition. It didn’t take long for us to lose the concentration, allowing Clon in for the first try of the match. Niggling handling errors left us scratching our heads as we conceded another try. For the next 10 minutes there were some good phases together, which resulted in the home side scoring their first try.
The heads were well up, they then moved the ball with confidence, small breaks, and darting runs through the centre. Just before halftime the concentration lapsed and Clon punished Collig with another try. We made changes at halftime, a stern team talk for Collig and they busted out of the blocks. Quick hands and good decision making and we scored a good try.
They had a sense that they could haul the game around, as the home side were getting on top, but a knock on too many, and they fell further behind as Clon scored another try. With it all to do now, with the pressure on Collig responded as they do, and scored again. For the last 10 minutes of the game, they had Clon pinned in there own 22. Any ball they got they kicked. Though Collig kept hammering back, time and again, in the finish Clon held on for the win. It’s back to the drawing board lads!
Third Team
Ballincollig 24 Clonakilty 15
Ballincollig's Thirds hosted Clonakility in Tanner Park last Sunday. Balllincollig and Clonakilty were both unbeaten in the league to date - this was going to be a very competitive match for the two teams. The kick off was originally scheduled for 1.30 but due to a communications error on the visitors side proceedings eventually got under way at 2.30.
The game was played around about the centre of the pitch for the first twenty minutes as both teams sought to impose themselves on the opposition. Ballincollig forwards put their stamp of authority on the encounter which lead to a Ger Kelleher try from half way following a good lay off from centre Tommy Murphy. Michael Daly kept in touch all the way drawing some of the covering backs to allow Ger the touch down right of the posts. The resulting conversion was slotted between the uprights by outhalf John Gleeson, 10 minutes later Clonakilty were awarded a penalty just beyond halfway which was converted to leave the score at 7 -3.
Clonakilty were awarded a scrum following a knock-on 10 meters from their own line, Ballilncollig won the ball against the head with strong scrummaging from front row Tadgh Hurley, Gary Hanlon and Liam Kavanagh. The pack maulded forward to draw in the cover and a quick release put Ger Kelleher in under the post for his second try of the match. John Gleeson again adding the 2 points with the conversion. 'Collig were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time which John Gleeson slotted between the posts. The score at half-time 17 - 3 to the home side
Coach, Matt Chapman, emphasized that the game was far from over and started from zero again in the second half. From the kick-off 'Collig were under severe pressure with Clonakilty attacking in waves. Impressive defensive work kept the visitors at bay and resulted in Clon knocking on
5 meters from the line. The resultant clearance brought Ollie O'Sullivan into the game to demonstrate his kicking ability.
Keith Stafford had been introduced to replace Tommy Murphy in the centres. 'Collig were awarded a scrum in the centre of the pitch, Keith made good ground to release Ger Kelleher who drew the cover and with a sweet pass put Michael Daly away for a try in the corner. The conversion was added.
The score now stood at 24 - 3 at 48 minutes into the match. Clonakilty were coming more into the game as the match progressed and were getting their patterns of play in place. Their efforts were rewarded when they scored from a driving maul to make it 24 - 8 with 27 minutes left on the clock. Ollie O'Sullivan was replaced by Daniel Barry who went on the wing and Michael Daly moved to full back. The introduction of Kiernan McCarthy, Ed. McCarthy and John Dwyer brought fresh legs to the pack. 'Clon were awarded a scrum on the 'Collig 5 meters and though the team defended galantly the visitors were not to be denied and scored in the corner with the conversion to follow the game finished
24 - 15 in favour of the home side.

Ballincollig 5 Old Christians 5
In very difficult conditions it was always going to be a low scoring game. Old Christians with the elements in their favour started well and kept Collig pinned back for long periods. From a speculative Garryowen the greasy ball proved difficult to control and the onrushing Old Christians hacked on to score in the corner. Ballincollig regrouped well and some surging runs from B.Bohane supported well by the whole pack ensured space for the backs with W O' Sullivan touching down for a well deserved try.
Turning around for the second half the team was confident as our lineout through D.Dineen jumping 2 and great support from D.Farrell and R.Owens was well on top. Our scrum had Old Christians under pressure all day resulting in numerous turnovers. Even with all this possession scoring became impossible due to ever deteriorating conditions. Even though a lot of work has to be done overall the coaching staff were pleased with our first outing of the year.

Ballincollig 26 Douglas 27
It is little consolation to have been a participant in what was the best match of the season and losing by one point. Ballincollig and Douglas shared 53 points in a high scoring thriller in Tanner Park on Sunday.
Ballincollig stared brilliantly and by the ten minute mark were 14 – 0 up and fully deserving of that lead. The two tries were well taken by Brian Calder and Brian O’Keeffe and both converted by Ken O’Connell. They then allowed Douglas back into the game. Ballincollig lost their own lineout for Douglas to score a converted try. A revitalized Douglas then scored two tries and converted one to lead 19 – 14 at half time. What a turn around!
The second half was played at a fierce pace and Douglas scored first to lead now 27 – 14. To their credit Ballincollig did’nt give up and following good handling Kevin Baston scored, Ken O’Connell converted to get within a score. Douglas then hit the bar with a penalty and Ballincollig moved the ball throughout the team for Kevin Neeson to score a remarkable try. Ken O’Connell missed the conversion to leave Ballincollig still a point in arrears.
Ballincollig laid siege to the Douglas line. Kevin Doyle dropped the ball as he went over under the posts. Ronnie Murphy was adjudged to have made a double movement as he touched down in the corner. The referee then failed to see Kevin Neeson touch down as he powered over from close in. A disappointing loss but a display that augurs well for the future.
In a very good pack John Redmond, Chris Butler, and Kevin Neeson were outstanding. Matt Chapman made a big impression when he came on.
In the backs Ken O’Connell and Eoin Cahill were best and also Kevin Baston whe came on.

Ballincollig Seconds have win in East Cork
Youghal 15 Ballincollig 25
Ballincollig started very poorly with soft tackling coupled with soft attitude saw the visitors trailing by 12 points after 20 minutes (2 Tries and 1 Conversion). A spell of poor concentration followed into the second period of the first half, culminating in concession of a penalty, leaving the score 15-0 to the home side. A fortunate penalty for the visitors left the score at half time 15-3.
Paul Taylor gave the team some home truths at half time and the team responded, with the wind at their backs it appeared they woke up at last! The ‘Collig forwards, led by second row Denis Casey, they rucked and mauled their way deep into Youghal territory. This pressure was rewarded by 2 early penalties from in form James McSwiney. This constant forward pressure was rewarded by a fine mauled try landed by Denis Casey. The difficult conversion was landed by James “Seven out of Seven” McSwiney. Youghal had no answer to a now switched on ‘Collig side. 5 More penalties from James rounded a satisfactory performance from this J2 Side.
Next week they are in Tanner Park to Tralee.

Ballincollig 18 Bandon 15
It was the opening game of the season and a home match as well, Ballincollig were put under pressure from the kick-off by an eager Bandon side. It wasn’t long before the visitors crossed over for a converted try. This fancied Bandon side kept ‘Collig under the cosh, until they produced a piece of magic and scored a try in the corner. Game on. It stayed that way until half time. A drink of water and a rub of the sponge and ‘’Collig came out firing. With a lot more purpose to their game, keeping the ball tighter, driving at the opposition where they managed to get a penalty, which was then converted. With ‘Collig’s nose in front now, and keeping the tempo up, tackling and touching down for another try. From the restart Bandon put some phases together and put ‘Collig back in our own 22. A promising move from the opposition resulted in a knock on. We took full advantage, went up field and scored a further try. Credit to Bandon they kept coming at us and managed to score a try, also in the corner at the final whistle. A very hard fought victory. All credit to both sets of players. Well done Ballincollig.

BALLINCOLLIG RUGBY CLUB
Ballincollig 0 Old Christians 8.
Ballincollig lost their first game in this new division on Sunday. In a game played in terrible conditions Ballincollig put up a brave show and were unlucky not to come away with at least a bonus point. Old Christians went ahead early with a try from their No. eight. They dropped a goal soon afterwards to lead 8-0 at half time. Despite their best efforts neither side scored in the second half. This was due to the strength of both defences and the driving rain which made handling very difficult.
The Ballincollig pack played well in the conditions. Prominent were Danny Gleeeson, Chris Butler Rob Dennehy and Kevin Neeson.
In the backs Brian O’Keeffe and C O’Mahony showed up well.
Team. Brian O’Keeffe, Kevin Doyle, C O’Mahony. Ken O’Connell( C ) Eoin Cahill. BJ Harvey Brian Calder. Danny Gleeson, Barry Stevenson, Mick O’Neill, Brian Buckley, Chris Butler, Rob Dennehy, Aidan O’Driscoll, Kevin Neeson.
Subs used John Redmond.
Next up is Douglas in Tanner park on Sunday. Hopefully we can build on our display last week and get our first win in this division.
J2 League
Ballincollig 19-5 Muskerry
Ballincollig defeated Muskerry at Tanner Park on Sunday Morning in a keenly contested local derby. As the opening game in the league campaign both teams were anxious to start with a win.
Muskerry kicked off playing with a slight wind advantage and with the rain beginning to fall. Muskerry started the stronger and dominated the early exchanges with only some last ditch tackling and good counter rucking preventing them from crossing the line. With Ballincollig now beginning to play themselves into the game, especially from touch where Fergal Twohig and Bryce Willoughby began to excerpt pressure on the Muskerry lineout. With the rain coming down in torrents both teams missed kicks at goal, while Ballincollig saw one ball dropped forward over the line and another maul over the line called held up. Both teams entered the half time break without scoring.
The second half resumed at a much higher tempo, Ballincollig winning a lineout on the Muskerry 22 and mauling to the goal line where Fergal Considine dived over to score, with the conversion missed Ballincollig lead 5-0. With Ballincollig gaining the upper hand in all aspects of the match now including the scrum after a positional change in the front row they struck again when after good back play Eamon Kinehan crashed over in the wing. James McSwiney taking over the kicking duties slotted the conversion leaving Ballincollig 12-0 ahead.
With 25 minutes to go Muskerry had their prop John Horgan unfortunately sent off and despite this and the introduction of fresh legs into the Ballincollig side Muskerry had their most productive period of the match eventually resulting in an unconverted try leaving them just 7 points behind and with renewed hope of a getting a result. After the restart Ballincollig’s center partnership of Kevin Baston and Keith Stafford blocked out the charging centers of Muskerry and reinforced with Colm O’Mahony and Dennis Casey now on in the second row Ballincollig composed themselves and laid siege to the Muskerry line with a number of loose breaks and driving mauls with Will Shubart and Rory Owens to the fore. Out wide Sean Leahane and Ronny Murphy were introduced keeping the Muskerry defense stretched.
However it was through another driving maul from a lineout that saw Will Shubart touch down to secure the points. James McSwiney again kicked the conversion leaving Ballincollig 19-5 ahead. With 3 minutes left Ballincollig tried everything to score a fourth try which would give them the bonus point on offer but despite the glorious run and pass of Haulie Kelly the ball was knocked on just short of the Muskerry try line. With Muskerry kicking for touch and time being blown the bonus point went a begging. However Ballincollig will be happy with the result and looking forward to an away fixture with Youghal next weekend. td)

New 3rd Team start campaign with a Bang
Ballincollig 35 Kinsale 0
Ballincollig J 3 team got their League campaign off to a great start last Sunday in Tanner Park with a 35 - 0 victory over Kinsale. Scorers for the home side on the day were, Teidgh Hurley, Shane Murphy, Garry Hanlon and two from Eoin Crowley, out half John Gleeson delivered the conversions and penalties with two of each.
It was a great squad performance by all, as the conditions on the day were very poor with persistent rain throughout. Next week it’s away to UCC K. O. at 2.30 Curaheen Road.
First Team
Ballincollig 8 Skibbereen 10
Ballincollig lost to Skibbereen in the semi final of the O’Neill Cup on Sunday. Having beaten Douglas away in the previous round Ballincollig must have fancied their chances of advancing to the final.
Skibbereen kicked a penalty early on to lead 3-0. Gradually Ballincollig got back into it and their improved line out and scrum gave them a steady stream of possession. Ken O’Connell kicked a penalty to level the game before BJ Harvey started a good move and then took the return pass from Luke Dennehy to score a try in the corner.
Ballincollig were looking the better team at this stage but worryingly were giving the ball away cheaply with wild passes and failure to hold on to the ball in contact.
In the second half Ballincolligs play became more and more disjointed and they eventually paid the price when Skibbereen scored by the posts. The conversion proved to be the difference between the teams.
Skibbereen and Douglas are in the division in which we will be playing this season so it is comforting to see that we can compete at this level. Some of our new players are shaping up well. Brian Calder at scrum half and Chris Butler at second row both had fine games. The return of Brian O’Keeffe and Denis Stevenson also gives the squad much more strength in depth.
Team. Kevin Doyle, Brian O’Keeffe, Ken O’Connell, Luke Dennehy, Eoin Cahill, BJ Harvey, Brian Calder, Danny Gleeson, Barry Stevenson, Mick O’Neill, Brian Buckley, Chris Butler, Matt Chapman, Rob Dennehy, Aidan O’Driscoll.
Subs, Ian O’Malley, Ronnie Murphy, Micheal Kelly, Eoin Twohig,
Next Sunday the really serious stuff starts. Ballincollig travel to Rathcooney to play Old Christians in the first league match of the season. This will be a huge challenge for newly promoted Ballincollig. Old Christians are playing well – they beat Kanturk in the other semi final of the O’Neill Cup. Ballincollig are hoping to more than make up the numbers in this division this time around. Their preparation, fitness, and the ability of the newer players to fit in will be seriously tested.
Should be a good game!!!!!
